An Ohio Dog Parent Survival Guide

If you live in Ohio, you already know the deal: one day it’s freezing, the next day it’s 65°, and somehow your dog is shedding like it’s their full-time job. Welcome to shedding season—or as we like to call it, twice a year… minimum.

Shedding is totally normal, but managing it the right way can save your floors, furniture, and sanity.

When Does Shedding Happen?

Most dogs shed year-round, but in Ohio, heavy shedding usually hits twice a year:

  • Spring: When dogs drop their thick winter coats as the weather warms up

  • Fall: When lighter summer coats make way for a cozy winter layer

Because our weather loves to keep things interesting, some dogs shed a bit longer or more often—especially those with thick undercoats.

How Often Should Dogs Be Professionally De-Shed?

During peak shedding season, we recommend a professional de-shed every 4–6 weeks. For heavy shedders or double-coated breeds, staying consistent makes a huge difference.

Regular de-shedding helps:

  • Reduce fur buildup in your home

  • Prevent matting and compacted undercoat

  • Keep your dog cooler, comfier, and happier

Our De-Shedding Process (AKA: Where the Magic Happens ✨)

This isn’t just a quick brush and a prayer. Our de-shed service is a full, professional process designed to safely remove loose coat from root to tip.

Here’s how we tackle the fluff:

  • We start with a high-velocity dryer before the bath to blow out loose hair

  • Your dog is bathed with a de-shed specific shampoo, followed by a de-shed conditioner to loosen stubborn undercoat

  • A hair release spray is applied to help excess hair slide right out

  • During and after the bath, we use a high-velocity dryer paired with de-shed combs and rakes while drying

  • Once fully dry, we finish with professional de-shed tools to catch any remaining loose coat

How Long Does It Take?

A professional de-shed typically takes 20–45 minutes of additional time added on to the typical groom/bath and depends on:

  • Your dog’s size

  • Coat type and thickness

  • Overall coat condition

The payoff? Way less shedding at home and a coat that feels lighter, healthier, and cleaner.
